Investing in Bluey dollar bucks!

Bluey

Bluey

My boys have loved Bluey since it’s release in 2018. I have fond memories watching episodes with them and may have picked up a few parenting tips from Bandit and Chlli.

Bluey is a global phenomenom so when I heard about limited edition Bluey coins I had to get my paws on some.

Royal Australian Mint

Below are the Bluey coins released in September 2024 by the Royal Australian Mint. The proof coins are collectors items with limited mintage. Take note of the prices at release and limit per person.

RoyalMint

I am not a numismatist aka coin collector so I had no idea what a proof coin was. Below is the definition from the Royal Australian Mint website.

Proof

But I was late to the Bluey coin party. Mmmm late is an understatement, I had missed the party by about 6 months. Bluey coins sold out on their release day - 02 September 2024. They were the hotcakes everyone wanted.

Official outlets Auspost and Royal Australian Mint eshop were out of stock so I turned to the second hand market. “They can’t be much more expensive than retail” I foolishly thought.

eBay

Gumtree and Facebook marketplace had a few proof coins listed. I chose to use eBay because I trust their secure methods of payment.

The second hand market was on fire 🔥

Below were the first coins I purchased:

GoldProof
SilverProof

Wowsers in 6 months the market value increased by around

  • 540% silver proof (retail $99, now ~$640)
  • 340% gold proof (retail $50, now $220)

Speculative Investment

I am a firm believer that building wealth is a long game. Investing for the most part should be passive, automatic and essentially boring - think auto pilot. Having said that life is meant to have a little spice and therefore I am ok with allocating a small percentage to speculative assets.

Bluey coins are my speculative asset and to date makes up ~5% of our portfolio. If the Bluey proof coin market bottoms out it won’t affect the wealth engine.

Anyone close to my orbit in the past 6 months can attest to me bleating on about Bluey coins…sorry but not sorry.

Hopefully you think Bluey proof coins are foolish so I can accumulate more 😂

I believe the combination of Bluey’s enduring global popularity and the scarcity of the proof coins will ensure their appreciation over time.

But I could be wrong and that’s why I class it as a speculative investment.

Expendy!

My goal was to acquire 5 gold and 5 silver proof coins. Why? I wanted everyone in the family to have their own coins. We will gift the boys their coins when they are adults.

Since March 2025 I’ve kept an eye on the second hand market and purchasing more coins when we had spare money. Coming into September 2025 I knew to achieve my goal (2 more silver proofs) would be expendy.

The appreciation since March 2025 hurt my wallet for the next two purchases. $1300 AUD that’s just over 100% appreciation since my purchase in March 2025 ($640).

SilverProof

The coin I bought was the cheapest on eBay. Almost immediately after my purchase, the seller of the next cheapest silver proof coin increased their price from ~$1300 to $1500.

The next purchase was a bitter pill to swallow due to the hefty price tag. But I needed one more coin to round out the collection.

This combo deal made sense through my Bluey investment goggles. The silver proof was $1500 and I was paying just over $250 for each gold proof coin. The gold proof coins were selling individually for ~$400.

Combo

Oh, Biscuits!

While writing this blog post I noticed the Royal Australian Mint have announced 2 new Bluey Christmas coins. I’ve entered the ballot so hopefully I get invited to the party this time.

It should be noted that there is only 1 proof coin and the mintage is a lot higher. I personally don’t think the new silver proof coin will be as valuable as the original proofs due to the higher mintage.

Time will Tell

I am pragmatic enough to know the appreciation rate is not sustainable. For giggles I asked ChatGPT to tell me what the silver proof coin would be worth in 30 years assuming same rate of appreciation. ChatGPT basically told me to reel my greed in.

I joke with Rachel that in 30 years they will be worth 1 million each. She laughs it off but a small part of me believes or rather hopes it’s possible…..

But I seem to have developed a small itch

We have 5 silver proof coins and 7 gold proof coins. It would be criminal not to round out the collection with another 2 silver proof coins….. #firstworldproblems
